For the past 17 years elementary schoolers all over Pasco County have come together annually to participate in the Water Awareness Poster Contest presented by the FGUA and Pasco County Utilities.
With each school that participates, teachers have the opportunity to present a tailor-made presentation to their students to kick off the contest. This educational presentation is developed with guidance from the District School Board of Pasco County, mindfully created to fit the Pasco curriculum standards, and can be implemented by both art and science elementary teachers. Each artist that participated received sponsor donated giveaways. The top three artist in each grade, Kindergarten to 5th, receive additional prizes. Along with prizes raffled off for participating teachers. This year’s winners will be announced and will be awarded trophies during a June BOCC meeting.
Over 1,000 students from 12 schools and 35 teachers took part in this year’s contest. The theme centered around “World of Water”. Artists were encouraged to create posters that represented a world full of clean and sustainable water. This program, at its heart, began as a drawing contest in 2009. Over the years, with both contest growth and strengthened relationships with local sponsors, this wonderful contest has grown and flourished. Being featured in news sources, receiving praise from the Board of County Commissioners for Pasco County, and has been awarded the American Water Works Association as a “Best in Class” and “Show of Excellence” for its emphasis on water conservation outreach and education.
